Easily one of my favorite artists currently making music today, Venetian Snares, is set to release his next studio album on August 23rd. It’ll be called “My So-Called Life” and comes in the standard CD, Vinyl and MP3 releases. It will also be the first release on Aaron Funk’s new sublabel, Timesig.
Here is the release off the official page:
“My So-Called Life” is the first release on my brand new record label Timesig. The majority of these tracks were made quite quickly, in a day or 2 each. These are the ones I feel closest to, I can listen to one of these 10 tracks and remember that day exactly, all that I was feeling, just where my head was at, whether it was a good memory, a laugh, something that was bugging me or something bumming me out. Listening brings me back to that day, whereas hearing some of my other albums brings me back to some period in my life in general. I was explaining to a friend the other day, it was more like a collection of short stories than a novel for me. Diary entries he said, and they really are, pockets of inspiration realized within a day. For me it is remote viewing my own memories with clearer and clearer mind binoculars. All important pieces in my puzzle, this kind of filing system I have that sits outside my cognitive filing yet is clear in this system. Of course all of this probably means nothing to you but you have to write something in these things so when you send out promos nobody has to think of anything thoughtful to say about it themselves. Usually I write a bunch of preposterous shit to poke fun at that whole process but I didn’t feel like that today. Maybe tomorrow I will.
You can view the official release page at Planet Mu’s website here. Cannot wait, especially for Hajnal2!
One of my most favorite musical acts is releasing a new album in the coming weeks. Quite possibly the most psychedelic music you’ll come across, Shpongle will be releasing their 4th album, Ineffable Mysteries From Shpongleland, on November 2nd.
Samples of the tracks can be found in the music player on Shpongle’s website, Twisted Records.
At the end of this post I’ll have a player with some Shpongle tracks on it to listen to. Please do yourself a favor and listen to some of them. It is some of the most amazing music you’ll ever hear.
I’m also working on the creation of a music review website that will focus on the electronic music genre known as psychedelic ambient, which Shpongle definitely falls under. Still working on the site as well as material to post, but hopefully I’ll get some hits on it soon and I’m very anxious to read some comments over on that site about the reviews I’m writing.
Huge Porcupine Tree fan here. Definitely in my top-ten favorite bands ever. I’ve been listening to their stuff now for about eight years.
I’m not sure if I’m just not a true enough fan or not, but I always seem to be about a month or two behind on new release news from my favorite bands–not sure why that is. But anyway, I found out this morning that Porcupine Tree has a new album coming out September 14 by Roadrunner Records. You can read about and listen to samples of the new album here.
My quick opinion of the small teaser sample they’ve got up on the web page sounds both like the PT of old–driving prog-rock with beautiful harmonies and melodies–to something brand new which I can’t really describe but like a lot. Give it a listen and let me know what you think…especially if you’re an old-time PT fan.
Below is a few select songs from their discography. Enjoy.
Personally, I find The Mars Volta to be one of the most original sounding and talented bands of the last 20 years. Every new album they release surprises me in a way I didn’t think was possible. If you haven’t heard them, you can listen to some of my favorite tracks in the player I’ve added below. Really, listen to these guys.
In the past year or so I’ve had friends of mine tell me that if I enjoy Thomas Pynchon‘s work then I should look in to the works of David Foster Wallace. I had heard his name before but dismissed it because I had no time or even the thought that anyone could be compared to Pynchon turned me off–as bad as that sounds. A few weeks ago I was in the local bookstore and one of the store’s employees had set up a small David Foster Wallace display. I walked up to it and started thumbing through his book Infinite Jest and was immediately struck by its overall size. The damn thing is 1079 pages, with footnotes! An employee saw me thumbing through it and came up to me and asked if I’d ever read and of DFW’s work. I said that I hadn’t and she said too that if I enjoyed any of Pynchon’s work, that I’d definitely like DFW’s work and especially Infinite Jest. So I purchased it and started it last night.
What immediately arrested my attention was Wallace’s deep, dense, and gorgeous prose. He uses words that I admittedly have never heard before–which is a great thing for me as a reader and developing writer–and I frequently found myself reaching for a dictionary. After a few times of looking up novel words, I thought it’d be a good idea to make a list of these words along with their definitions and share them, hoping that someone might be enriched by a new word or two.
